What is Mame Shiba Cafe?

Inside the Mame Shiba Cafe in Asakusa

Mame Shiba is a smaller breed of the Shiba Inu (dog) family. “Mame” means “beans”, which relates to its size when compared to a normal Shiba inu.

Mame shiba cafe is a place where you can enjoy being around the Mame Shiba’s in person, taking photos and petting them. The “Cafe” portion of the name does not have much of a meaning although they do offer you a drink.

Location and Fees

  • Fees: \900 (Adult: 13yo+) / \700 (Child: 6-12yo)
  • Open hours: 12:15 – 17:20 (Week days) / 11:00-18:35 (Week ends)

Tickets come with one free drink and can only be bought at the venue on the day. There is no pre-booking available by phone or internet. There may be a small que around the entry time but nothing major. It can get pretty warm inside so good to have that in mind.

The experience

Overall the experience is great if you love being around cute doggies. You must respect the Shiba’s and not be all over them as it causes stress for the dogs. The best part is that sometimes the Shiba’s come and rest on your lap which is way too cute.

If you are planning a visit, I would suggest going at an earlier time as these lovely doggies will get tired and start to slow down and take a nap during the afternoon. I will also note that there are many other customers in the same area which can feel a little crowded.
